What Causes Bleeding Gums?

Bleeding gums can be caused by several reasons, such as periodontal disease or gum disease, poor oral hygiene, aggressive brushing, hormonal changes and certain medications.

The buildup of bacterial plaque and food debris around the teeth and gums can irritate the tissues and cause inflammation, resulting in bleeding. In addition, hormonal changes during pregnancy, puberty or menopause can make the gums more sensitive and prone to bleeding. The same goes for diabetic patients, they are more prone to bleeding gums. Some medications, such as anticoagulants or antihypertensives, can also increase the risk of bleeding gums.

How to Prevent Bleeding Before It Occurs?

To prevent bleeding gums, it is important to follow good oral hygiene and maintain consistent care of your gums. Here are some preventive measures you can take:

  1. Proper dental hygiene: Brush your teeth after every meal with a soft- or medium-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Be sure to brush gently and pay attention to the gum line. Always use an interdental brush, and add flossing to your routine if you like. Finish with an antimicrobial mouthwash to reduce bacteria buildup and maintain healthy gums.
  2. Healthy diet: Maintain a balanced diet and avoid sugary foods and beverages that can contribute to plaque buildup. It is also recommended to consume foods rich in vitamin C, which promote gum health.
  3. Avoid smoking: Smoking can aggravate gum problems and increase the risk of bleeding. If you smoke, consider quitting to improve the health of your gums.

How do I deal with bleeding gums?

If you are already experiencing persistent or excessive bleeding gums, it is essential that you consult a dentist for proper diagnosis and treatment. You could have a serious disease such as periodontitis and need a treatment such as dental scaling that improves the condition of your gums significantly.

At Dental Clinic Crooke & Laguna we have many methods to diagnose your gum problem, as we are specialists in Periodontics.

The Computerized Periodontogram

Advanced Technology.

A periodontogram is a tool we use in our clinic to evaluate and record the patient’s periodontal health status. It consists of a probe that produces a detailed dental chart showing the condition of the gums, periodontal tissue and teeth.

With the Florida probe we can evaluate the depth of the periodontal pockets. The periodontal probe is gently inserted into the spaces between the teeth and gums to determine the presence of inflammation, bleeding and the measurement of the depth of the periodontal pockets.

In a periodontogram, we find data that indicate the internal health of the gums and the bony support around the teeth. These measurements include the depth of the periodontal pockets (spaces between the teeth and gums), the level of connective tissue attachment, the presence of bleeding or inflammation, and any signs of gingival recession and tooth mobility.

It is very useful for the diagnosis of the patient, as it allows the comparison of the results after treatment over time. It helps the dentist to plan the treatment and to follow up the periodontal evolution.

By stopping bleeding gums, it means that the gums are healthier and less inflamed. By stopping bleeding, you reduce the presence of plaque and inflammation that can cause periodontal diseases, such as gingivitis.

Like the Periodontogram, at Dental Clinic Crooke & Laguna we have several tools that make us a reference in periodontics.
